No Pants Light Rail Ride 2018 was fantastic!

No Pants 2018 recap

The temperature went up and the pants came down for the 10th annual No Pants Light Rail Ride! It was unseasonably warm on Sunday, January 7, 2018 when 100s of people rode the light rail sans pants, while people in over a dozen other cities did their No Pants rides in actual wintery weather.

Even before the event, we had our first encounter with light rail security. It’s tradition for the organizers to draw arrows and signs on the ground from the light rail stop to the meet-up venue a few hours before the ride begins. This year, a pair of light rail security were on the platform as we began to chalk the ground with a large “No Pants” and an arrow. They asked what we were doing, and we nonchalantly responded, “We have an event today.” We were surprised they didn’t know what “No Pants” referred to.

At 1pm, we kicked off the ride by kicking off our pants. Pantsless groups boarded the light rail, starting at various points from the east and the west to converge at DeSoto Central Market. Most of the reactions from onlookers were positive. A group on one train said they were protesting global climate change – it shouldn’t be warm enough ride the rails in January in undies and t-shirts. Others said they were just on their way to meet up with friends and they had no idea who these other pantsless riders were.

More than one train got a visit from light rail security who rode with the group. When invited to de-pants, they declined and pointed to the train’s security camera. They had a good laugh over where we were keeping our tickets with a lack of pockets.

This was the first year we used DeSoto Central Market as the meetup location, definitely the biggest venue we’ve used to date. The main group from the west side arrived before the east side group, and they said the panted patrons were bewildered and delighted at the arrival of the second pantsless group, as if they thought the first group was an anomaly. Several panted patrons dropped trou and joined in our fun.

(BTW – To the panted couple at DeSoto who were having their first date when our pantsless group arrived: She thanked us for giving them something that broke the ice and something to talk about. She said the odds of a second date were high.)

One of the highlights of the meetup was the live music courtesy of The Painted Soul. Their sound was so funky and festive and it made our group feel welcome in the space. It was so much fun seeing dozens of people dancing in their underwear.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s ride! You can see our photographer’s images from the event here, and we were covered in both The Phoenix New Times and AZ Central.

We’ve created a Facebook event for next year’s ride if you want to join us again. We won’t know the official date until Improv Everywhere announces it in December, but it’s usually a Sunday in early January. Please add yourself to stay in the loop and please subscribe to our list so you’ll know about all of our upcoming shenanigans.

Spreading Love Like Butter

There’s a lot of anger and frustration out there, so we thought it would be nice to remind people that they are beautiful and the world is also filled with lots of love. So last Saturday, 60 amazing people braved the Phoenix heat to share some joy with unsuspecting drivers with our first Love and Compliments Rally!

courtesy Kenny Muzzey

We made signs created to make people smile and they drove through the intersection at Central Avenue and Indian School Road. Here were some of our favorites:

  • I like your face.
  • You deserve tacos.
  • You could survive the zombie apocalypse.
  • You are beautiful.
  • Kevin loves you.
  • Honk 4 love.

This event had nothing to do with politics or any causes, and not even sarcasm. We just wanted to let people know how much they are loved, and that they all help make the world a better place.

People loved the love

We stood at the intersection for about 45 minutes, getting lots of honks, smiles, and waves from cars. The best was an older couple where the wife in the passenger seat was nudging her husband the driver to honk the horn, and when he refused, she reached over and did it herself. They were adorable.

Toward the end of the rally, a car pulled up next to us. It was people from Kneaders Bakery and Cafe. They had extra box meals from an event they supported that morning, and they wanted to give us the leftovers to share some love for us. We happily took their leftovers and shared most of them with the homeless people in the area.

Check out just a few of the great pictures in our Facebook album.

We will do it again

Special thanks to everyone who ventured out into the blazing sun to share some love with us. We’ll definitely do this again.

If you want to join us, make sure you sign up for our email list so you don’t miss it!

You are beautiful!

Mark your calendars and get ready to show off your gams at No Pants 2017!

The 9th Annual Phoenix No Pants Light Rail Ride will be on Sunday, January 8, 2017. (Has anyone done every No Pants Ride with us so far?) This ride is done in conjunction with Improv Everywhere’s No Pants Subway Ride and other No Pants Rides that will be going on all over the world that day. Make sure you’ve subscribed to our mailing list and RSVPed on our Facebook event.

We will be zipping across the valley sans pants on the Valley Metro Light Rail that afternoon and meeting at a central location. With the recent expansions, we may have some new starting locations this year and other surprises. We’ve been scouting some possibilities and we’ll give you more information as the day gets closer!

Remember, the rules are very simple:

  1. NO WALLFLOWERS! Everyone who shows up must take off their pants. (This includes the media.)
  2. You must have your googly bits covered at all times. We don’t want anyone to get a ticket for indecent exposure.
  3. Follow the rules of the light rail.

We’re jazzed for the 2017 Ride and we hope you are too. Start looking for your awesome undies as you finish your holiday shopping.

Where’s Waldo meets Santa and a T-Rex

(cc) Devon Christopher Adams

A small but fun group of Waldos showed up to help entertain people in downtown Phoenix. We had not just regular Waldos and Wendas, but also kids, dogs, and even a Waldo T-Rex!

Once again we saw people spot the distinctive clothing and grin as they scanned the crowd (and ice rink) looking for Waldo. Even Santa got in on the fun. It was a wonderful way to spread some smiles around Christmastime.

You can check out some of the great pictures on Flickr or in our Facebook album!

Where’s Waldo flash mob in Phoenix

Where’s Waldo details

(cc) Paul Houle on Flickr

We wanted a fun, easy flash mob before the holidays, and who doesn’t love Where’s Waldo? All you need to do is dress up as a character you might see in a Waldo picture and join us!

  • When: Saturday, December 10th, 2:45pm
  • Where: CityScape in Phoenix (map)
  • Meet at: CityScape Starbucks
  • Light Rail: CityScape is right next to the Central/Washington or Jefferson/1st Ave stops
  • Parking: If you’re driving down, there should be plenty of parking downtown on the weekend.
  • Facebook Event: Right here (Please share!)

Other Importantish Info

  • Meet at the CityScape Starbucks (west side of CityScape) at 2:45 to get organized. We will start the flash mob at 3:00.
  • Be creative, but don’t dress exactly like Waldo. A Waldo will be provided.
  • Bring something to do, like read a book, play catch, etc. There is an open courtyard at CityScape, lots of steps, and places to sit/stand. The CitySkate ice-skating rink will be open if you want to do that.
  • CityScape is free to get into, but there is a fee if you want to skate.
  • We may head over to Angel’s Trumpet Ale House for a drink afterwards. This is entirely optional.

See you tomorrow!

No Pants Light Rail Ride date is set

Also, we have a date for the 8th No Pants Light Rail Ride! It’ll be January 8th. We’re still working out all the details, but you can RSVP on the No Pants Facebook Event if you want to keep up to date.

Cheers!

No Pants 2016 Recap: We All Hate Pants

No Pants 2016Close to 400 people shed their modesty and their pants at the 8th annual No Pants Light Rail Ride!

On Sunday, January 10, 2016, our pantsless group boarded the light rail at four main locations throughout the valley. Lucky for us, it was the same weekend as the festivities for the national college football championships. This meant we had an influx of out-of-town guests who were shocked by how we roll in Phoenix. One person remarked, “This is almost as cool as Vegas”.

Valley Metro did a great job of crowd management by adding extra cars to the trains and providing security that helped our group spread out throughout the cars. The Phoenix Police were on hand near the downtown area, checking the cars for dubious characters, sweeping for radiation, and even brought a bomb dog through the cars. One of the officers asked us, “Aren’t you freezing your asses off?”

Our group converged on Angels Trumpet Ale House for a beverage and a bite and to share stories from our adventures. It was definitely a family affair this year – pantsless people of all ages and walks of life. One of our captains did the ride with her mom in tow. There was one particularly adorable couple on this year’s No Pants Light Rail Ride – an older duo who did the ride as part of their first date! The gentleman of the pair said, “Now we have a story to tell the grandkids. On our first date, we walked around town not wearing pants.” (We assume they already have their respective grandkids and were not planning to start popping out two more generations after meeting today.)

The No Pants Light Rail Ride is always a spectacle. Our favorite shirt of the day said, “I hate everyone (and pants).” We were so happy to see that our friends who wear animal heads, paws, and tails joined us again – sans pants of course. Their ability to play cornhole at Angels Trumpet, while wearing their giant heads was impressive.

Thank you to everyone who came out for the No Pants Light Rail Ride, and a huge thank you to Angels Trumpet for hosting us. The owners and servers did an incredible job taking care of everyone.

Be sure to check out the photos from this year’s ride on Flickr.

Make sure you’re on our mailing list to stay in the loop on our next flash mob and all our shenanigans.

The No Pants Light Rail Ride is part of global No Pants Subway Ride, founded by Improv Everywhere.

The 8th Annual No Pants Light Rail Ride in Phoenix is this Sunday, January 10th. This is part of The No Pants Subway Ride, which is a global event started by Improv Everywhere in New York in 2002.  Thirty-three cities around the world are participating this year!

Here are the details for the Phoenix ride:

  • When: Sunday, January 10 at 1:00 pm (Over around 4 pm)
  • Where: 4 starting locations – details below
  • Bring: A backpack/bag and a Light Rail pass
  • Wear: Normal winter clothes (jacket, hat, etc.)
  • Facebook EventRight here. Please RSVP.
  • Mid-ride party: Angels Trumpet Ale House

We know it’s been rainy this week, but the forecast says it’s not as likely to rain on Sunday. But rain or shine, warm or cold, we’re doing this and we hope you’ll join us!

HOW IT WORKS

You can wear almost any type of underwear you want – except thongs or g-strings. If you’re going to wear boxers we encourage you to wear briefs underneath them in case your fly separates – you can get in trouble for indecent exposure if you reveal too much!

Take your pants off on the light rail platform or before you get there. If you’re worried you will be cold on the platform, you can take off your pants on the train, just be aware that it’s trickier and more crowded. If you are wearing your pants to the event, bring a bag or purse to carry them once you de-pants.

If you’re starting at the airport location, wear your pants to the airport and take them off just before we start.

HOW TO ACT

Do NOT tell people you are doing a prank! While you’re riding, act as if nothing strange is going on – no matter what. Do what you’d normally do on the light rail – you have no idea why others are not wearing pants. If anyone asks, have a simple excuse prepared for why you’re not wearing pants – you were hot, you forgot them, etc.

We will have photographers on hand to take pictures documenting the event. We need everyone else to just act casually. If you bring a camera, be very discreet and only take a few pictures. It’s supposed to look like a normal train ride.

Don’t disrupt the Light Rail! While the Phoenix Police Department said that wearing your underwear in public isn’t illegal, but don’t do anything dumb. You are responsible for all your actions during this event.

STARTING LOCATIONS

We have four main starting points with two starting locations for the east side riders. Just go to one of the starting points listed below, and board the first train that arrives after 1 pm. Make sure you arrive in time to get a Light Rail pass from one of the machines at the stations! Each starting location will have at least one member of the Improv AZ core team to provide last-minute instructions if needed.

  • West Side – riders will board the first eastbound train from the 19th Ave./Montebello stop at/after 1 pm.
  • Far East Side – riders will board the first westbound train from the Sycamore/Main stop at/after 1 pm.
  • ASU Stop – riders will board the first westbound train from the Veterans Way/College Ave. stop (TransitCenter) at/after 1 pm.
  • Sky Harbor Airport riders will start in Terminal 4 (while wearing pants). Before 1 pm, remove your pants (publicly or in a bathroom) and meet your fellow pantsless riders next to the A-Z Kids Store at 1 pm. We’ll walk to the Sky Train and take it to catch the light rail at the 44th Street/Washington Stop.

Here’s a handy Google map with all the major stops and locations.

WHERE TO STOP

Everyone will exit the train at the Central Ave/Roosevelt Light Rail Stop. Our mid-ride party will be at Angels Trumpet Ale House (about a 5-minute walk from the light rail). They will have some specials for us if you want to grab a bite or a pint. This is an all-ages place, so minors are welcome. We’ll stay here for about an hour or so, but you are free to leave early if you need to, or stay later if you’re having fun.
